Summer Favourites

Over the last few years, instead of talking the talk, I’ve decided to walk the walk when it comes to eliminating toxins from my body. Eating clean, free of processed garbage has been a big step that is now apart of my daily life. The next step is eliminating toxins from my daily beauty routine.

I wanted to share with you the products I’ve switched to.

Shampoo:

I use Lush’s solid shampoo called Karma Komba a couple times a week and I’m hooked. I switched to solids last year, for ease of travel. But another perk is that they last WAY longer than liquid because you add the water to the bar when you lather it up in the shower!

Conditioner:

I LOVE Lush’s solid conditioner called Jungle. It smells AMAZING and leaves your hair feeling clean, soft, and doesn’t leave behind those nasty sulphates! UH MAZE ING

Beachy Sea-Spray:

Lush’s Sea Spray Hair Mist changed my summer! I love wavy hair but I hate having to curl it, especially in the hot summer time. This summer, I got in the habit of washing my hair, braiding it, spritzing the sea spray into my tresses and letting it set! The end result was beachy waves, like I’d spent the day at the beach! Plus it also smells amazing!

Moisturizer:

Obviously I’m a huge fan of Lush’s Karma products. If you’ve never smelled Karma Kream, get to your nearest Lush ASAP. It’s life changing! It smells fresh like flowers and clean like soap. When I’m feeling down, a wife of Karma Kream and I’m feeling brighter.

Make-up Remover:

Straight up olive oil. Before you think I’ve gone of the deep end, take a cotton ball with some olive oil on it and try and take off some mascara! I dare ya! You’ll be instantly converted! It’s gentle and natural!

Feminine Hygiene Products:

A good friend posted an article on Facebook about the chemicals found inside tampons and pads and it got me wondering why I’d never questioned whats inside something I put inside me. It never occurred to me to question it but after some digging, I found a product I can trust. Natracare doesn’t use harsh bleaches to whiten their products and they only use cotton. I’ve been using them for quite some time now and I’ve noticed their absorbency is even better than the others, which makes up for their price tag, which is a few more dollars a box than their competitors.

Where have I been?

When I started as a Community Correspondent, I was un-employed. I spent my days at home in bed looking for work and blogging about mental health. Just over a month ago I started my first ever big girl job. I’m full time and I work 10 – 6, Monday to Friday. A dream come true! But by the time I get home from work, I am too exhausted to blog. My after-work time is very precious. It’s usually filled with eating, exercising, and chatting with my boyfriend. and SLEEPING! My job can be pretty emotionally exhausting. But having that stability in my life has been such a fantastic form of therapy.

I want to apologize for not blogging more. It’s been a crazy time for me but I promise I will set aside time in the week to blog. I’m realizing how precious time really is!

Triple Chocolate & Banana Protein Muffins

3 ripe mashed Bananas

2 Eggs

2 Scoops of Chocolate Protein Powder of your choice

1/3 Cup of Whole Wheat Flour

1/3 Cup of Oats (Either whole oats or blended into a powder)

1/2 Tsp of Baking Powder

1/4 Tsp Baking Soda

1 Tbsp Unsweetened Cocoa Powder

Handfull of Dark Chocolate Chips

Mix everything together! Pour into greased muffin tins and back at 375 for 10-15 minutes. Use a toothpick to check if they are done! Stick it in to the centre and if it comes out clean, they are ready! Let them cool and ENJOY! You should get 6 fairly large muffins for on batch.

I added ground Flax and Psyllium Husk but forgot to add more liquid so they turned out a tad too dry but still edible. You can definatly substitute anything for anything just keep the ratio between wet and dry ingredients fairly similar to the recipe.

Let me know how yours turn out!

I have a massive idea.

Something so big and such a huge undertaking but something that will equal so much good for my community and beyond.

My brother is helping me out so much with it. He is a brand strategist and is helping me develop my ideas. He’s an amazing person and has helped me out so much in life. Once again, he’s right here beside me every step of the way.

I am filled with so much hope and joy right now that I just had to share it.

Watch out for some big things coming your way this year. STAY TUNED

Lykke Li – Breaking it up

I am feeling super nostalgic today.

I am actually feeling really proud of myself and Reid and all we’ve been through over the last four years. This song was my favourite song when I met the love of my life. I played it on repeat on my way to and from our first date!

That’s the day my life changed forever.

It was a hot, breezy, Victoria afternoon. I went hung out with my best friend that night and I said to her, “I am going to marry him someday” and we laughed.

DIY: Pinterest-Inspired Shower Steamer

DIY shower Steamer

So you’ve got that naggggggging cough, huh?

It’s kind of hard to start a brand new year while you’re still carrying around germs from last year.

I have been sick since the moment I went away for holidays until now.

But I’ve found the cure! Or at least a good excuse for some alone time.

I made these incredible little shower pucks that you put at the other end of your shower that smell like Lavender and Eucalyptus. Once the shower starts to steam up a bit, you’re transformed into a sauna filled with good vibes and head clearing scents. Try it yourself!

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • 1 cup Baking Soda
  • 1/3 cup Water
  • Food colouring
  • Muffin Tin, Liners, or a silicon muffin tray
  • Essential oils

Directions:

Add your 1 cup of baking soda to a glass bowl.

Slowly add 1/3 cup of water to the baking soda. Add a little bit at a time. Add more if it needs it. It’s supposed to look pasty.

Mix well. Add any food colouring that you’d like. White is a little plain. I coloured mine a relaxing seafoam green. Ow la la!

Put into a silicon muffin tin or a paper-cup lined muffin tin.

Bake for 20 minutes at 350 degrees.

Let cool.

Add 2 drops of each scent to each cooled puck. (it will seep through to the bottom!)

Once the essential oils have been completely absorbed (I left mine over night), hop in the shower for a long, steamy, session.

Let me know how it worked!

Food & Fitness Friday: Banana Bread/Muffin

20121130-194720.jpg

Welcome to the first ever instalment of Food & Fitness Friday! Eating well and keeping an active lifestyle are key to mental health. No matter what any journal or study will ever say, the benefits of exercise and eating healthy do wonders to your mood. Well, that’s been the case for me, anyway! Since I started to eat clean and eliminate unneeded gluten from my diet, I’ve noticed such a difference. Add in exercise and you’ve got a recipe for a better mood.

So I have been following Blogilates for about a year now and I LOVE Casey Ho and her workout videos. She instagram’d a picture of some banana bread/muffins she made and the recipe was so simple I knew I was going to have to try it out! I tweaked her recipe a bit and added in my own goodies. Here’s the recipe with my tweaks:

2 cups of Large Flake Oats.

1/2 cup of Almond or Soy milk (regular milk is fine too)

2 Eggs

2 Ripe Bananas, Mashed

a dash of cinnamon

a drop of vanilla extract

a sprinkle of flax seeds

(I didn’t measure the last three… Just added until I was satisfied! Remember less is more. You can always add more to the mixture but you can’t take it away!!)

Mix it all up and put it in either a muffin tin or in a loaf tin. It wont rise so be sure to fill cups or tin accordingly. Bake for 15-20 minutes at 350 degrees. Take out and let cool before diving right in there and enjoying that deliciousness!

Comment below or tweet me and let me now what you thought of the recipe! Easy, huh? Instagram me a picture if you want to! I’d love to see it!

Happy baking!

Mental Health Monday – Holidays are Coming!

First ever “Mental Health Monday”!

The holidays are fast approaching, whether you’re ready or not! Basically a stay-at-home wife, I’ve had the ability to be ready for Christmas for weeks already. But I have nothing to be ready for. My boyfriend and I are heading to BC for Christmas on the 20th to spend the holidays with my family! OH JOY! I do love my family very much but there is a twinge of anxiety inside me that I just can’t seem to push away. The thought of two weeks of being shipped between my mom’s house and my dad’s house without my our own mode of transportation and no means of escape is enough to drive anyone bonkers. I am extremely nervous for the festivities. Alcohol, fattening treats, lack of exercise…these are all my triggers! AHHH

So I am making a bit of a plan of attack for the trip. Thank god my loving boyfriend will be there. he’s always on top of my medication schedule (thank god) and always pushing me to stay active (much to my dismay) but without him I would get lost in a cycle of self deprecation. A downward spiral filled with candy cane ice cream, bailies, and Grand Theft Auto 4 mixed in with a spattering of TOO MUCH RETAIL THERAPY! That’s how I spent last Christmas season. Just add in two boxes of wine and you’ve got the whole picture

Stay Active

We are spending 2 weeks there so we might as well get comfortable. I will be bringing my running shoes so I can keep up my training for an up coming half marathon (that’s a whole other blog post in its self!) and to keep up with my newly adopted active life style. My boyfriend and I have been spending so much time at the rec center lately and it’s been so good for our health (both physical and mental) as well as our relationship. Doing something together with a common goal is so rewarding for our relationship. Little things like high five-ing when he laps me for the third time really make me feel like we are in this together.

Eat Clean

My mom eats very clean and follows a gluten-free inspired diet just like myself. She suffers from the same mental health illnesses I do. Diet is something we can both agree on in terms of maintaining a healthy body and mind. But around the holiday times those lifestyle changes can be easily exchanged for high fat treats and sugary sweets! An extra serving of gluten-rich stuffing? YES PLEASE. So right now I am in talks with my mom to try and create some gluten free dishes to serve around the holiday season. My boyfriend and I love to cook so I hope to cook a lot for her while we are there and teach her some tricks she might not know. The student becomes the teacher, huh? Christmas doesn’t have to equal pounds gained!

Take Time Away

My boyfriend and I have planned some things to do alone while we are there. I know it will be important for both of our sanity to escape the christmas mayhem for a bit. We’ve planned a day at this mineral spa just north of my mom’s town. For $60 each we get full day access to the mineral grotto and unlimited food from the tapas bar! YUM! So Hugh Hefner! We might even get a couples massage. WE’LL SEE. After that we are planning a trip with my mom and her boyfriend up to our families cabin on the ocean and a trip up the mountain to go tubing and hang out at the chalet and sip some drinks! It’s weird to think of doing that kind of stuff with my family. The last time I went up the mountain with them I was about 14 and the bar was 100% off limits to minors!

Enjoy Every Minute

Last but not least… I need to just relax and enjoy the time with my family. I have a habit of getting all wrapped up in the details and planning that I forget to just enjoy. It’s not every day I am lucky enough to spend time with my loving family. I miss them so much. I haven’t seen my Mom since last March, if you can believe it! This has definatly been the longest stretch of time since I moved away a few years ago.

What’s your plan of attack for the holiday season?! Anything else I should try to make the holidays stress free (or at least less stressful)?
